Just wanted to drop you a line to say that Vic is a good teacher. I knew there were flaws in my game from fishing too many small brookie streams that don't really requite much presentation. He took me to a difficult stream- the Kennebago and those trout are tough. With Vic, my flaws showed and although I finally did get a decent one, most of the catch were dinks.
I tried the Cupsuptic the next day and got skunked. Access to that stream isn't particularly good, but I managed to get to some of it via a campsite that wasn't being used. I found a big pool below a sizeable waterfall and got some hits but nothing that got hooked. That stream is probably out of my league and to make matters worse I got skunked on my birthday. I made up for it the next day.
On our way out of Maine, we stopped at a much-fished section of the Magalloway. Using a lot of what Vic had showed me, I had a decent hour or 2. I first tried an orange Hornberg. It's a fly that I never treat with flotant because I do not care if it sinks. It can act like a streamer. I was fishing a nice current in midstream when I spotted a rise down below me. As I was reeling the Hornberg in to go downstream, I suddenly realized that something had chased it down and got hooked. It was a nice 10" Brookie. I couldn't get anything interested in the Hornberg again so I switched to the fly Vic had me use; a Klinkhammer. Wham. I started getting trout. I got another nice 10" probably fatter than the 1st, a couple of 7" and a pair of smaller ones. I was trying my best to do it like Vic showed me and it worked. The big one however, was not a trout but a Fallfish about a foot long. Whatever. When I hooked it, I thought I was into the Brookie of my dreams. That thing could fight. When I got it close enough to see it was not a trout I was disappointed, but I netted it anyway. Those things are feisty but ugly.
A young woman and her husband showed up. He was carrying their new 4-month-old baby so she could try the stream. I could tell right away she was new to the sport. Her presentation was worse than mine, so I stepped in and tried to correct her casting. I knew immediately what the problem was. She was using a streamer, but she had it on a sink-tip line. That stream is too shallow for that. She admitted she did have a floating line, so I got her to make the switch. I added some tippet. I put my Klinkhammer on it. Recalling everything I could about Joan Wulff's casting and Vic's presentation, I got her to stop shorter with the back-cast and get the line out there with some slack in it. Ok, so her 1st 2 fish were more Fallfish, but she did get a Brookie. She didn't care what she was catching. I was glad I had helped and I am sure she will stick with fly fishing. Not only did Vic help me, I will credit him with helping her, too.
Thanks, Vic. Maybe I will have more confidence in bigger streams. I will start with the Savage River in western Maryland this fall. I usually stick with the tribs. This time I'll give the main stem a go.
